The Ministry of Defence Police Tactical Firearms Unit (TFU) is one of the most advanced armed policing capabilities in Britain. TFU officers are based at the AWE sites in Berkshire, providing specialist protection in support of the UK's defence and security interests.

Operating in some of the most complex and secure environments in the country, TFU officers are trained to the highest standards in specialist tactics and firearms handling. Officers typically begin as new recruits, gaining exposure to station operations and building foundational skills before progressing onto the TFU Initial Course. Experienced officers transferring from other forces follow a parallel but accelerated route, drawing on existing policing and firearms experience.

Selection for the TFU involves a rigorous assessment process focusing on tactical proficiency and operational judgement. Only officers who demonstrate the required capability progress to the comprehensive specialist training that follows.

Specialist training and skills development

TFU officers receive some of the most advanced firearms and tactical training available in UK policing, delivered through specialist facilities across both civilian policing venues and the Defence estate. Instruction is delivered by a dedicated training team, comprising current officers and ex-service personnel with real-world operational experience, developing in-depth firearms handling, tactical accuracy, and continuous operational excellence.

After qualifying, officers become eligible for a range of enhanced specialist training opportunities, including Police Medic (D13.2), Advanced Driving, Operational Firearms Commander, Tactical Advisor, and further tactical specialisations, supporting genuine long-term career progression within the unit.

Working life in the TFU

Life in the TFU combines rigorous operational readiness with a strong sense of teamwork and shared purpose. Officers work closely within their sections, building the trust and cohesion that specialist armed policing depends on. The role is demanding, both physically and mentally, and officers are supported through ongoing training, fitness development, and welfare provision to sustain performance over the course of a career.
