From Delivering Pints to Protecting Ports: PC Smith's Apprenticeship Journey

This year's National Apprenticeship Week theme is 'Skills for Life', something that resonates deeply with the Ministry of Defence Police. As a force committed to protecting the nation's defence and security assets, we require not just a highly skilled and adaptable workforce, but individuals with personal qualities of resilience, courage and loyalty.

PC Smith exemplifies these qualities. As part of one of the very first cohorts to embark on our Non Home Office Police Officer Apprenticeship, his dedication has been nothing short of inspiring. Through hard work and commitment to excellence, he not only completed his apprenticeship with flying colours but also became the first-ever recipient of the MDP Apprenticeship Award.

A Different Path

For PC Smith, university was never on the cards. "I've always been more of a hands-on person," he explains. "My family isn't one to push university as a necessity, and I've always been drawn to roles where I could roll up my sleeves and get stuck in."

Before joining the MDP, he worked as an HGV driver for Carlsberg. While he enjoyed the practical nature of the work, he wanted something more challenging. "I wanted something that would push me out of my comfort zone and give me a real sense of purpose. That's when I heard about the MDP and decided to apply."

Having previously completed a Level 3 apprenticeship in carpentry and joinery, PC Smith understood what to expect from apprenticeship learning. "It's a structure that really works for me because it's not just about sitting in a classroom; it's about applying what you learn in real-world situations."

Embracing the Challenge

PC Smith admits to initial nerves about returning to education. "Policing is a world away from driving lorries or working in the trades," he reflects. "But the skills I'd picked up in my previous roles - like problem solving, time management, and working under pressure - turned out to be really useful."

The apprenticeship combined theory with practical experience, allowing him to see how his developing skills could make a real difference to the Defence estate. "I loved getting out there and learning on the job. The self-led learning aspect gave me flexibility to focus on areas I wanted to develop, which kept me motivated throughout."

Being part of an early cohort meant PC Smith could help shape the programme itself. "I quite enjoyed being the test subjects and providing feedback to the apprenticeship managers. It felt like we could really help shape the future of the course."

Giving Back

His contributions extend beyond his own achievements. He has become instrumental in supporting the next generation of MDP apprentices at his station, mentoring new recruits, sharing experiences, and working closely with apprenticeship managers to enhance the programme.

His advice for future apprentices is straightforward: "Just apply yourself as early as possible. You can't sit back - the support is there if you need it. Play to your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Use the knowledge checks, keep on top of revision, and go over case studies. Everyone learns differently, so find a method that works for you and stick to it."

Programme Success

Sergeant Harris, MDP Apprenticeship Sergeant, praised his achievements: "PC Smith is a shining example of the high calibre student officers we are privileged to work with. Since launching the apprenticeship in September 2022, 111 student officers have completed and passed their apprenticeship."

The programme continues to exceed expectations, with the MDP achieving a 77% achievement rate in 2024/25 - significantly above the government's national target of 67%.

"This outstanding result is a testament to the hard work of our students, trainers, coaches, Line Managers, and everyone involved in delivering the programme," Sergeant Harris added.

Looking Forward

For PC Smith, the apprenticeship opened doors he never expected. "I've gained skills and experiences I never would have had otherwise, and I've found a career I'm genuinely passionate about. The satisfaction I get coming into work every day is proof I made the right choice. There's no one-size-fits-all path to success, and sometimes the hands-on approach is the best one."

The MDP apprenticeship programme continues to grow, with the next cohort preparing for their End Point Assessment in March 2026, while new recruits will soon begin their own apprenticeship journeys.
