New Recruit Training

Building the foundations of your Defence policing career 

Every new recruit with the Ministry of Defence Police begins their career with comprehensive training that transforms you into a professional police officer. Our structured programme provides everything you need to succeed in your new role while building the foundation for a career in Defence policing.

Training is provided by our Learning and Development department, who are all qualified instructors with a diverse level of experience and knowledge.

All travel, food and accommodation are provided throughout your initial training to enable you to focus on your learning.

New Recruits Training

Your journey starts at the Defence School of Policing and Security (DSPS) in Southwick Park, Hampshire, where you'll undertake residential training that combines classroom learning with practical application.

For Officers Serving in England and Wales:

  • 12-week residential course at DSPS

  • Level 4 Non-Home Office Police Officer Apprenticeship (2-year programme)

  • 21 weeks total initial training

For Officers Serving in Scotland:

  • 10-week residential course at DSPS 

  • Level 7 Scottish Diploma (2-year programme)

  • 19 weeks total initial training

During your residential training, you’ll learn the essential knowledge required to become an attested police officer. The New Recruit Training combines classroom instruction with practical application, covering everything from legislation and powers, to policies and procedures.

Training is delivered using a range of teaching methods including interactive presentations, video content, practical simulations, and group discussions. You'll also complete essential e-learning modules before completing your New Recruit Training Course.

Our structured curriculum includes MDP-specific training, criminal and traffic law, general police duties, Ministry of Defence policies, Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) awareness, and Personal and Public Safety Training (PPST). The programme also incorporates scenario-based exercises, fitness assessments, drill instruction, basic driving skills, and concludes in a formal pass-out parade.

Throughout the course, you'll receive continuous feedback and formative assessment to support your development. Final summative assessments combine written examinations with practical scenario evaluations, ensuring you demonstrate both theoretical knowledge and practical skills before qualification. 

Firearms Training

Following your New Recruits Training Course, you'll complete our intensive 9-week Firearms Training Course at one of our regional hubs to prepare you to become a qualified Authorised Firearms Officer Counter Terrorism.

Station-based development

After completing your New Recruits Training and Firearms Training, all officers will carry out the remainder of their training at their station, undertaking a station-based induction, with emphasis placed on local systems and procedures.

Probation assessment

Your probationary period concludes with formal assessment's.

Apprenticeship candidates

  • External End Point Assessment including knowledge checks, professional discussion, and practical evaluation

Scottish Diploma candidates

  • Internal MDP assessment through knowledge checks and practical assessments

During the 2-year probationary period, an MDP officer is expected to show consistent professional behaviour and performance.
