Vetting

Eligibility - Vetting

Navigating Our Vetting Process

Working with the Ministry of Defence Police means protecting some of the nation's most sensitive locations and assets. To ensure we maintain the highest security standards, all candidates must successfully complete an in-depth vetting process.

We operate at Ministry of Defence sites across the UK, which requires both Force Police Vetting and UK Security Clearance Vetting (UKSV) processes. This dual approach ensures you meet the specific requirements for both police work and access to classified Defence materials.

What to expect

Complete transparency is essential

Being completely open and honest throughout recruitment and vetting is crucial. Any attempt to omit or conceal information will be viewed as evidence of unreliability and dishonesty, potentially ending your application.

Fair and consistent treatment

All candidates are treated impartially regardless of age, disability status, gender, gender identity, marital status, race, ethnic origin, religion, belief, or sexual orientation. People from diverse backgrounds and experiences successfully obtain clearance at the highest levels.

Professional support

Our vetting processes follow College of Policing guidelines and established government standards. While the process may seem daunting, comprehensive guidance and support are available throughout.

UK Security Vetting (UKSV)

Security Check (SC) Clearance

This is the minimum requirement for all new entrants, involving:

  • credit checks,

  • verification against UK criminal and security records,

  • international checks where appropriate.

Developed Vetting (DV) Clearance

This is required for enhanced security sites, such as AWE, involving:

  • detailed security questionnaires,

  • financial checks including credit reference agencies,

  • character referee interviews,

  • comprehensive interview with a Vetting Officer.

The UKSV process ensures your character, circumstances, and integrity make you suitable for accessing sensitive information while remaining resistant to potential blackmail or coercion.

Force Police Vetting

This additional layer, conducted according to College of Policing standards, provides police-specific reassurance through open-source internet enquiries and national police system checks.

Critical disclosure requirement

You must reveal all relevant matters regardless of outcome, including minor police enquiries resulting in no action or informal warnings, plus any dealings with Military Authorities. Changes in personal circumstances must be reported immediately.

Additional considerations

Common Access Card (CAC)

This may be required for US Visiting Forces bases, requiring additional personal information for US authorities.

Previous Police Service

Specific guidelines apply for those with prior UK police experience, including restrictions for recent warnings, misconduct sanctions, or ongoing investigations.
