The Ministry of Defence Police Tactical Firearms Unit (TFU) represents an elite armed policing capability in Britain. As a TFU officer, you'll provide specialist protection for the AWE at Aldermaston and Burghfield, safeguarding the UK's nuclear deterrent.

Operating in some of the most complex and secure environments in the country, TFU officers specialise in dynamic entry, hostage rescue, and the protection of nuclear materials. Your role demands exceptional decision-making, tactical discipline, and the ability to operate under extreme pressure in scenarios of national importance.

The demanding nature of TFU operations means you'll work in highly specialised environments, developing advanced tactical skills while contributing to operations that are fundamental to national security. These responsibilities offer the opportunity to master cutting-edge techniques whilst serving at the forefront of Defence protection.

Specialist training and skills development

Selection for the TFU involves a rigorous assessment process focusing on tactical proficiency and operational judgement. Only officers who demonstrate exceptional capability progress to our comprehensive 10-week upskill course.

TFU officers receive some of the most advanced firearms and tactical training available in UK policing, delivered through specialist facilities across both civilian policing venues and the Defence estate. Under close instruction from our dedicated training team - comprising current officers and ex-service personnel with real-world experience - you'll develop in-depth firearms handling, tactical accuracy, and continuous operational excellence.

After qualifying, you'll immediately become eligible for enhanced specialist training opportunities, including Police Medic (D13.2), Advanced Driving, Operational Firearms Commander, Tactical Advisor, and additional tactical specialisations.
