From Porton Down to National Security: PS Wilson's 20-Year Journey with the Special Escort Group
For PS Wilson, joining the Ministry of Defence Police's Special Escort Group wasn't just a career move – it was the beginning of a two-decade journey protecting some of the nation's most critical assets.
"I was attracted to the role because of the unique challenges and responsibilities it offers," says PS Wilson, who joined the SEG in 2005 after four years as an Authorised Firearms Officer at Porton Down. "The opportunity to work in a highly specialised and dynamic environment, with its focus on teamwork and precision, really appealed to me."
First Impressions
Walking into the SEG for the first time, PS Wilson was struck by the professionalism and dedication of his new colleagues. "The level of training and attention to detail was impressive. Everyone was committed to maintaining the highest levels of security and operational excellence."
That commitment hasn't wavered. Today, with 24 years of MDP service behind him, PS Wilson has held roles including Police Constable, Sergeant, Traffic Officer, and Escort Commander for rail operations.
A Typical Week
Life in the SEG is anything but routine. Officers plan, coordinate, and execute secure escorts across road, rail, and air, conducting detailed route planning and risk assessments while liaising with multiple agencies.
"Operational days often involve early starts or late finishes," PS Wilson explains. "Officers need to remain flexible and adaptable, as plans can change at short notice. While the role can be demanding, it's also highly rewarding."
The Weight of Responsibility
Protecting assets fundamental to national security brings both privilege and pressure. "It requires an exceptional level of focus, professionalism, and attention to detail – there's no room for error," says PS Wilson. "It's a responsibility I take very seriously, and it motivates me to maintain the highest standards."
Team Spirit
One aspect PS Wilson consistently highlights is the exceptional camaraderie within the SEG. "The team operates like a well-oiled machine, with clear communication, shared responsibility, and a collective commitment to excellence. Knowing we can rely on each other, no matter the situation, creates a strong sense of unity."
This supportive environment extends beyond operations. "Team members are always ready to step in and assist one another, whether offering advice, sharing workload, or providing reassurance in high-pressure situations."
Continuous Development
PS Wilson's career demonstrates the SEG's commitment to professional growth. Beyond his core roles, he has served as a Fitness Trainer, Counter-Terrorism Security Coordinator, and Joint Operations Centre Supervisor. He is currently part of the Talent Development Programme and recently completed a secondment with HMICFRS.
"Continuous training and specialist skills development have been fundamental in shaping me as an officer," he reflects. "The SEG has pushed me to continually adapt, learn, and refine my abilities."
Proud Moments
Over 20 years, PS Wilson has accumulated memorable highlights: supporting the 2012 Olympics, earning promotion to Sergeant, training officers to achieve fitness standards, and developing new Team Leaders.
"Training new Team Leaders has been particularly rewarding," he says. "It allows me to pass on knowledge and contribute to developing the next generation of leaders within the SEG."
A Message to Potential Applicants
For all current / recently serving officers considering the SEG, PS Wilson's advice is clear: "Take the opportunity. The SEG offers a unique and highly rewarding career path, providing the chance to develop specialist skills while contributing directly to national security."
"For those who are motivated, disciplined, and eager to push themselves, the SEG provides excellent opportunities for personal and professional growth. It's a chance to be part of a team that plays a vital role in protecting the nation's most critical assets."
