Police Driving Instructors (PDI)
Police Driving Instructors (PDI)
Drive the Force Forward
The Ministry of Defence Police Police Driving Instructors (PDIs) play a vital role in maintaining the operational capability of the Force. As a PDI, you'll be responsible for delivering specialist driver training that keeps MDP officers safe, legally compliant, and operationally effective across a diverse range of vehicles and environments.
MDP operates across a wide variety of locations and terrains in support of Defence, meaning your training will cover everything from general patrol vehicles to specialist and armoured platforms. Your expertise ensures officers are prepared for the unique driving demands of Defence policing, from routine deployments to the most specialist operational requirements.
The varied nature of driver training means you'll work across multiple locations throughout the UK, delivering courses that directly support the operational readiness of the Force. This provides the opportunity to develop your skills across a broad range of training environments while contributing to work of national importance.
Specialist training and skills development
PDIs deliver College of Policing national curricula driving courses, covering advanced and response driving, road safety, vehicle familiarisation, and tutoring courses. All training incorporates relevant traffic legislation and MOD Transport Regulations, ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance.
Continuous professional development is central to the role. All PDIs undertake annual College of Policing reaccreditation and a minimum of five days CPD each year, keeping pace with advances in training methodology and evidence-based learning approaches.
Career pathways within Driver Training
Being a PDI offers several specialist development opportunities:
Evasive and Protective
Driving Specialists delivering advanced driving techniques for high-risk operational environments, requiring exceptional skill and tactical awareness.
Armoured Vehicle Platforms
Instructors qualified to train officers on specialist armoured vehicles used across Defence operations.
Police Driver Trainer
Senior instructors who develop and quality-assure driver training across the Force, contributing to the continuous improvement of MDP driving standards.
Professional development
All PDIs complete ongoing professional training to College of Policing standards, maintaining and enhancing their knowledge of new approaches to training through evidence-based research and advances in learning and development. This ensures the Force remains at the forefront of police driver training.
When not delivering courses, PDIs contribute to quality management activities, stakeholder engagement, and the development of innovative training solutions that support the wider Learning and Development function across the Ministry of Defence Police.
A career as a Police Driving Instructor offers a unique opportunity to combine specialist expertise with a passion for developing others, playing a critical role in maintaining the operational effectiveness of one of the UK's most specialist police forces.
