Learning & Development Trainers
Paving their path to protection
The Ministry of Defence Police's Learning & Development Trainers deliver engaging, meaningful training equipping New Recruits for their challenging role as Authorised Firearms Officers Counter Terrorism.
The first step in their path protection is the 12-week initial training programme, which takes place at the Defence School of Policing and Security Southwick Park, in Hampshire.
Curriculum and training
Trainers cover extensive Criminal Law content alongside Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), driver training, Personal Protection and Safety Training (PPST), and professional standards, delivered through classroom teaching and practical scenarios. Starting first thing in the morning, where no two days are the same - trainers prepare lesson plans, complete weekly student report books, and submit evaluations in this fast-paced environment.
Qualifications and specialist opportunities
Trainers without existing qualifications complete a Level 3 Award in Educational Training alongside an assessing qualification. Specialist opportunities include PPST Instructor, Driver Trainer, Driving Tutor, and Fitness Instructor roles, alongside wider development team positions.
Collaboration and unique focus
The team works closely with Professional Standards, Welfare, Firearms, Corporate Communications, and Resourcing, plus external training providers. Defence policing training is distinctive in equipping AFO-CTs with the specific skills needed to defend Defence to consistently high professional standards.
