Our operational groups and units

Specialist capabilities supporting Defence security

The Ministry of Defence Police maintains several highly specialised operational groups and units that provide enhanced capabilities and tactical support across our operations. These teams deploy both regionally and nationally to reinforce local resources and respond to specific operational requirements.

While we primarily recruit for Authorised Firearms Officer positions, there may be opportunities for exceptional new officers to undertake assessments for specialist units like the Special Escort Group after completing initial training. Established officers can apply for positions within these units after completing their two-year probationary period.

Our Specialist Units

Special Escort Group (SEG)

The Special Escort Group provides armed protection for the secure transportation of Defence Nuclear Material throughout the United Kingdom. This specialist team manages close escort and traffic operations for sensitive movements, working seamlessly with territorial police forces and other agencies in a multi-agency environment.

When not operationally deployed, SEG officers undertake continuous specialist training to maintain their exceptional capabilities and readiness. They may also support standard Authorised Firearms Officer duties at their assigned stations.

Tactical Firearms Unit (TFU)

The Tactical Firearms Unit delivers a dedicated specialist firearms capability that forms an integral part of protection for critical Defence assets. TFU officers operate in challenging environments and receive some of the most advanced firearms training in UK policing.

Officers in this unit develop advanced skills in tactical response and intervention, where rapid decision-making and precise execution are essential. Selection for the TFU involves a rigorous assessment process focusing on tactical proficiency and operational judgment.

Operational Support Unit (OSU)

The Operational Support Unit functions as a mobile armed response capability based in strategic locations across the UK. These officers can deploy quickly anywhere in the country in response to specific events, incidents, and emerging threats.

OSU capabilities include advanced tactical operations, specialised search techniques, working at heights, public order management, and technical interventions. Officers receive national-standard training in specialised skills such as rope access and confined space operations, enabling them to perform complex security tasks in challenging environments.

Central Support Group (CSG)

Based at key locations throughout the UK, the Central Support Group provides flexible support capabilities that can deploy regionally at short notice. These teams reinforce Force operations and protective security arrangements when additional resources are required.

CSG officers are trained in multiple specialist policing tactics including armed escort duties, public order management, search operations with dog teams, and Project Servator deployments— s a policing tactic that aims to disrupt a range of criminal activity, including terrorism, while providing a reassuring presence for the public.
