From Aldermaston to the Open Road: PC Meek's Life in the Special Escort Group
PC Meek joined the Ministry of Defence Police in July 2016, beginning her career at AWE Aldermaston following initial recruit training. Two years later, seeking new challenges and opportunities to develop specialist skills, she transferred to the Special Escort Group - where she remains a valued member of the team today.
A Different Kind of Policing
When moving to the SEG, the change was immediately noticeable. "Each day would be different, and the entire team were closer than any other team I had been part of," she recalls.
That variety hasn't diminished - a typical week might involve operational planning meetings and secondary role responsibilities one week, then multi-day deployments or large-scale exercises the next — with mandatory training woven throughout.
Travelling across the UK has also broadened her perspective on policing as a whole. "I have had experiences working with different forces and agencies around the UK which keeps me interested," PC Meek explains, adding that visiting wider force areas has given her a genuine appreciation for the breadth of capabilities within the MDP.
Protecting What Matters Most
Responsible for escorting assets fundamental to national security, PC Meek describes the weight of that responsibility with a grounded perspective.
"Honestly it feels like day-to-day life. We know our role is important in the wider aspect, which is why we do everything we need to in order to make it work. We take pride in our job and I think it's reflected in the success we have."
Professional Development
Since joining SEG in 2018, PC Meek has accumulated an impressive portfolio of qualifications and specialist roles, including National Firearms Instructor, Lead Taser Instructor and Firearms Tactical Advisor. She has also completed her Police Response Driving Course, Fast Roads Course and acquired her C Class Licence. PC Meek has also achieved numerous Level 3 and Level 4 qualifications, including in Education and Teaching and is a Dyslexia Workplace Needs Assessor.
In 2023, she qualified as an Live Fire Tactical Training Range Conducting Officer — a qualification that enables planning and conducting tactical training with live ammunition. She now sits on the College of Policing's National Practitioner Group and serve as the force lead for this specialism.
An Advanced Driving Course is next on the horizon, which will open further operational roles within the SEG.
"The continuous training and specialist skills gained have helped me to become a more confident individual both professionally and personally," she reflects.
Team and Culture
The Special Escort Group's close-knit culture is something PC Meek values deeply. Long periods of travel and high-tempo operations forge strong bonds. "I have made many close friends here," she says simply. During the most demanding periods, it is that collective spirit - and a healthy sense of humour - that carries the team through. "Everyone recognises the importance of pulling together and the benefits of working as a tight team."
Advice for Those Considering Applying
PC Meek has some strong advice for those considering joining the Special Escort Group.
"The SEG relies on individuals who can work as part of a team with a good attitude and are able to motivate themselves to get the job done. They need to be able to face the challenge of being away from home for at least a few days at a time on a regular basis — this is a reality of the role. The welfare support on the SEG is fantastic, and the management here will continue to support you through issues the best they can."
