"The Highlight of my Career": PC Davis 25-Year Career with the Special Escort Group
When PC Davis joined the Ministry of Defence Police in June 1998, he could not have imagined that a decision made three years later would define the next quarter century of his career. In 2001, he applied to join the Special Escort Group and never looked back.
"It may sound cheesy, but honestly, the highlight of my career has been being part of the Specialist Escort Group. The team is truly special, and I'm proud to have been a part of it - which is why I stayed for nearly 25 years."
A Different Kind of Policing
Starting out at AWE on static guarding and mobile patrols, PC Davis was drawn to the SEG by its motorcyclist role and the opportunity to be part of something genuinely unique. His first impression confirmed he had made the right choice.
"With only around 25 officers, it was a small and highly specialised team. Being part of such an exclusive group felt significant. Unlike the more contained nature of station duties, the role allowed us to get off-site regularly and interact with members of the public, which added a new and rewarding dimension to the job."
The SEG is responsible for the safe and secure escort of Defence assets across the UK. It is a role that demands precision, professionalism, and absolute trust in your colleagues.
Training, Development and Specialist Skills
One of the defining features of a career in the SEG is the breadth of professional development available. During his time with the unit, PC Davis accumulated an impressive range of qualifications - from completing a four-week zero-to-hero advanced motorcyclist programme to qualifying as a PEV driver, motorcycle instructor, driver tutor, TEAMS medic, and Operational Firearms Commander.
"The development I received within the SEG made me more confident as a person. The training, experience, and exposure to demanding situations prepared me for worst-case scenarios where lives could be at risk. It gave me the confidence to remain calm, decisive, and effective under pressure."
He adds that many of those skills extend beyond the workplace. His advanced driving qualifications have made him a safer driver in his personal life, and his medical training has been put to use at road traffic collisions during his daily commute.
The SEG Family
When we asked PC Davis what sets the SEG apart, and he returns repeatedly to the team.
"The SEG functions exceptionally well as a team. The group has grown so much over the years that it's not possible to be close with everyone, but there is a deep mutual respect across the board. We come together seamlessly on operations, both during the planning stages and throughout activation."
He describes a culture where professionalism and camaraderie sit side by side, where colleagues can share a laugh one moment and switch to complete focus the next. On longer deployments, shared meals and time away from home forge bonds that last careers.
"If someone is facing a welfare issue, everyone pulls together. The management team consistently supports us, even when the solution is costly, for example, they arranged last-minute flights to get someone home when needed."
A Career Worth Recommending
After nearly 25 years, PC Davis has retired from the SEG with a clear message for any officer considering making the move.
"Definitely do your homework and think carefully about what you want from your career. If you want a role that will test you and push you to your limits at times, then this is the job for you. We work outside the wire and in the public domain, which sets us apart from most other roles. It's a demanding role, but it is also incredibly rewarding. I can't recommend it highly enough."
