DS Howard
A Career Built on Investigation
After 20 years with Cambridgeshire Police, DS Howard has seen policing from every angle. Starting in reactive response before moving into specialist investigations across Public Protection, Domestic Abuse Units, and Professional Standards, he also trained as a hostage negotiator - managing sieges, kidnappings, and critical incidents requiring calm under extreme pressure.
Why MDP?
When his Sergeant's exam opened new doors, DS Howard looked for Forces offering genuine progression in his specialism. The Ministry of Defence Police's location, combined with stronger career development opportunities made the decision straightforward. "I knew colleagues already working there, which helped," he explains.
Life in Professional Standards
Now managing a team at HQ, DS Howard's days involve briefing investigators, reviewing ongoing cases, creating Initial Action Plans, and coordinating with the DCI and the Northern-based team. The caseload is substantial, but the work is meaningful.
The Most Rewarding Part
"Fully investigating an allegation - proving or disproving misconduct - that's what makes this role worthwhile," he says. Upholding integrity within the Force drives his daily commitment.
Advice for Officers Considering the Move
DS Howard encourages Home Office officers to consider MDP for firearms specialisation, marine roles, or investigative pathways. His message: step outside your comfort zone. The culture is welcoming, the work is challenging, and the opportunities are real.
