Accessibility

This accessibility statement applies to www.mod.police.uk.

This website is run by Ministry of Defence. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings

  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen

  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software

  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • The main site navigation may present problems for people using screen readers or keyboard navigation.

  • Some navigation elements, such as breadcrumbs and Search results pagination, may be difficult to quickly access and navigate for people using screen readers.

  • Text displayed over image banners may not be easy to read when resized up to 200%.

  • The confirmation and error messages for contact forms may not always be announced correctly for people using screen readers.

  • The social media share buttons that appear on some pages may be easily confused with the links to MOD Police social media sites for people using screen readers.

  • The Search Results page does not have a main descriptive heading.

Compliance status

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

The expandable elements in the main site navigation do not tell people using screen readers whether they are expanded or collapsed. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (Level A).

The mobile Search and main site navigation cannot be closed using keyboard or mobile screen readers. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.1.2 No Keyboard Trap (Level A).

Some of the Search buttons do not have any programmatic text value. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value (Level A).

The Breadcrumb and Search results pagination navigations are not contained within navigation landmarks. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships (Level A).

The confirmation and error messages for contact forms may not always be announced correctly for people using screen readers. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 4.1.3 Status Messages (Level AA).

Some link text does not accurately describe the link's purpose. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context) (Level A).

Text displayed over image banners may not be easy to read when resized up to 200%. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.4 Resize Text (Level AA).

The Search Results page does not have a main descriptive heading.

We plan to address these issues by December 31 2025.
