On joining the MDP each officer must successfully qualify as an Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO); at any one time 90% of officers on duty will be performing this role. Officers are trained to National Police Standards and are required to maintain this competency annually.
During your firearms module you will receive training in weapon handling, shooting skills, less lethal options and tactics. This will then allow you to demonstrate, in scenario based training, critical-decision making in a pressured timeframe.
You will also have the opportunity to gain further firearms skills should you wish to develop your career in a specialist post.
