Firearms Training

Every officer on joining the MDP is trained in the use of firearms and at any one time three quarters of officers on duty will be carrying firearms. Each officer is trained to national police standards and their competency established prior to being authorised to carry a firearm.

Firearms’ training prepares you in all aspects of the safe and appropriate use of weapons, including handling, marksmanship and tactical training. Our Firearms Training Centre uses the latest technology to simulate real life scenarios, where an officer would have to make split second decisions on appropriate use of force.

You will be required to undertake and pass a firearms training assessment as part of the selection process.  All MDP Officers in an armed role receive regular firearms training and are re-assessed on an ongoing basis.  Some officers, once trained, will go on to train in more specialised firearms roles and will receive further firearms training relevant to their role.
